Stephenie Meyer talks about the Volturi Casting

So back a little while ago now several fans sites got the unique oppourtunity to talk to Stephenie about the world of Twilight. We’ve put up several of the snippets so heres another of SM talking about the choices for the main three Volturi.

Here is what she had to say about Michael Sheen, Jamie Campbell Bower and Christopher Heyerdahl.

You can see lots of the other parts of the interview on Twifans. They really are great :)

All I can say is, ‘Thank you Chris Weitz’.

ARO…………….

SM: We kicked around a lot of names with that. And Michael Sheen was Chris’ choice (Chris Weitz, director). “Frost/Nixon,” he’s a great actor, but I couldn’t see him as Aro.

Alison: Oh, Lucian! (the character he played in the “Underworld” movies)

SM: Well, I hadn’t seen the “Underworld” thing, and I was like, “I don’t know,” I kinda had a different mental image. I had this actor, that actor that I wanted. And he talked me into it. First day I saw him on set, I went up to Chris and I said “thank you so much. You were right, I was wrong. I will listen to you forever, because you were SOO right on that one.”

Nikki (LTT): When he delivered that line, it’s just like, “oooooh!!”

SM: It was a delight to watch him go in there. Every little take he did something different. He did slightly different things. Always, of course, lines were perfect. Never a mistake, but he would give something different for the director to pull from. And he’s so great, he’s a really interesting guy. So much fun to talk to.

Bekah (LTT): My husband, who thinks I’m crazy, when Michael Sheen was in…

SM: That’s one of the reasons I love that movie…I love watching him, where every time he comes on, I’m like, “Say something!”

CAIUS…………………..

SM: I hate that Jamie Campbell Bower didn’t get as many lines. He is chilling. He actually tried out for Demetri. And he was too scary for Demetri. We were watching it. There was another guy that — Demetri is supposed to be — Charlie (Bewley) was sort-of the in-between. Demetri was supposed to be smoother and calm people down. But then of course, maybe people don’t want to ever have somebody as the peace maker. They want all the tension. So Charlie was scary, but not as scary (laughs) as Jamie. Jamie was CHILL-LING. And that his face took the makeup like nobody else. He has no pores! His skin was perfect! He got in the makeup, and every line he delivered had so much weight. It was like “more, more please.” Caius needs a story. The whole thing with him and Michael Sheen was great. Well, Marcus too.

MARCUS………………….

SM: Chris (Christopher Heyerdahl) is just……….creepy. Creepy. He just did this thing where it sounded like he had 500 years of dust on him. That part of the movie…I was sitting there talking to him, and I didn’t know it was him. He’s bald. I’m used to him with the hair. So I’m sitting there talking to this tall, bald guy, thinking that he was somebody else. And when I realized it was the actor, I’m thinking really quickly back through everything — did he know that I didn’t know who he is? And then I told him…”I didn’t recognize you without the wig and the red eyes and all that…”

Stephenie Meyer discusses Edward’s flaws

For a while now we’ve been hearing little snippets of a junket between the lovely Stephenie Meyer and some much loved fan sites.

Here is a little snippet of SM talking about Edwards flaws.
Do you believe he has any? Leave us commets below :)

You can hear the audio of this and more at Twifans.

TST: With your characters — do they run the show or do you run the show?

SM: This is something I’ve learned. People think you’re crazy when you tell the truth on this question. But, writers don’t think you’re crazy, because they understand. The characters run the show. Because once you create a character, it’s who they are. Sure, there are certain things they can’t do. Certain things they can’t say; it’s not in character. I had that problem with Edward a lot. In the beginning he was a really, a very strong character. New Moon came about because of his character. I did not want to write him going away, that was not very much fun, but if he hadn’t done that, how could he say he tried everything? He didn’t try everything to save her, if he hadn’t gone away. So that whole book revolved around his (Edward’s) iron nature that he had, that I could not get around. I could not just make him…he was so loathed to destroy her life. There was no way that he was gonna “okay, you’re right. We’ll just hang out.” He’s also such a know-it-all. Bella’s trying to tell him “look, this is something different than we think it is” and he’s “no, I know better….I’m a 110.” He’s kind-of a brat sometimes. It’s so funny when people think I have constructed (in a negative way) my idea of the perfect man and how flawless he is. No, he’s very flawed. I’m well aware of that. And he’s lived in this world where rules don’t apply to him. He does stuff that is over the line for a human person. But he is a vampire and can fool a lot of people. So going into someone’s room at night isn’t that bad, in comparison. And the rules don’t apply to him; he does all kinds of really shallow stuff. But I still like him.

Is Stephenie Meyer Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Here’s more from Twifans and their amazing date with Stephenie Meyer!

The Stephenie Meyer fan-junket interview was all roses & hollyhocks until we delved into the most contentious subject of all, Team Edward vs Team Jacob…yes, of course we had to go there! Both sides battled vigorously (I’m not going to lie…Alison & I fought HARD for Team Edward!!) It was a heavy debate but in the end Stephenie Meyer really is…Team Switzerland :)

Have you ever wondered about who would actually win in a physical fight between Edward & Jacob? We’re talking the nitty gritty here people! Depending on what team you’re on the answer seems obvious but Alison & I wanted to know what the goddess who created the whole Twilight world, Stephenie Meyer, herself had to say. So we asked:

Where Does Stephenie Meyer Keep Her Twilight Merchandise

As you will know, a handful of lucky Twilight fansites took part in a junket with Stephenie Meyer over a 4 hour lunch back in June. Here she tells them about her Twi junk.

Twifans.com: (LTT & Twifans) ask Stephenie Meyer TwiMerch & TwiRoom by twifans

Here’s the transcript courtesy of Twifans

Transcript:

LTT: So what have you been given where you’re, like, “Oh! Okay…that’s interesting…”

SM: What’s the weirdest thing I’ve been given? I been given some really amazing stuff, because someone gave me a quilt that…….I mean, I don’t have words. It’s amazing. Each square was made by someone different. And they depict scenes from different scenes from the book. And it’s lovely.
Someone knitted a giant Twilight book cover with the hand and the apple. It’s a bed-size blanket. And it’s amazing. That took a lot of effort!

(chatter)

Meghan: The drum?

SM: Oh, the drum….that was amazing. That’s one of my
favorite things. From the Quileute Nation, they sent me a drum, and I guess part of the package was “you have to make your first drum,” and it was somebody’s first drum that they had made, and it’s really beautiful. There’s one very similar to it hanging in Emily’s house. That was really cool. But they want things that are funny that I’ve gotten.

Meghan: Oh, funny! Well…

SM: I’m trying to remember…Something like, “Edward would
wait” and had a picture of Edward and things like that. And those are like, oh, man! The absolute embarrassment!

(chatter)

Kallie (TST): I remember last year at the premiere, there was a girl
who had Twilight, but then you turned it around and I guess it said “vampire”?

?: Werewolf.

SM: I mean you gotta give her points. That’s kinda cool.

Nikki (LTT): What about
the one that’s, like, Edward’s head, but he had, like, huge eyes.

(more chatter about various Twilight gifts and “30 Rock” TV
show & EDWARD MANILLOW)

SM: Yeah, there’s some stuff out there, especially the non-sanctioned stuff.

Alison (twifans): Do you have a room that you put all of the stuff in? Do you have a Twilight room?

SM: I have a Twilight storage shed. We have 3 storage sheds. They give me all of the official merchandise too. If you try and think, there are people who want this, you know, maybe I’ll give it to someone…

Meghan: You guys are getting some of it!

Group: Yeah!!

SM: For Christmas, we always do a White Elephant exchange in
my family. Kinda like a good joke. It’s like, who can get the best thing, right? I have a lot of brothers, so I got, like, the extra large Jacob with no shirt on.

(chatter)

Stephenie Meyer Talks Edward Cullen Making Bella ‘Wait’!

More from the Twilight fansite junket. This time they talk about Edward making Bella wait until marriage to consumate their relationship and if Eclipse sends out a good message!

Here’s the transcript, you can listen to the Q & A over on Twifans

Q: I’m curious about Eclipse because at the point where…I love Eclipse because Edward becomes a lot more flirtatious, and you get to kinda see that.

SM: They have some moments, which are hard to do with fiction because everybody wants constant pacing. I tend to slow down. A lot of what my editors did was cut. Because I just wanna sit and “Let’s have a nice moment. Let’s have a happy time.”

Q: One of the most “nice moments” is when they’re in Edward’s room in bed, and he proposes, okay? There are lots of people that have asked questions, I’ve probably had 10 or 20 just within that one scene. But the one I want the answer to the most is: Edward at one point, he kind-of caves. Just a smidge. When he says “no, no, stop, we’re not doing this until we are married” — is it more out of a moral issue, or is it more out of “I want to make sure you keep up your end of the deal”?

SM: They’re equal parts. There are a couple of things. One is, Edward was born in 1901. And in his mind — he understands the world more clearly than we do. He hears everybody’s thoughts. But to him, this is kind of a…for him it’s a very disrespectful… And he can’t get away from the taboos of his youth. It would be wrong to take advantage of her, in his mind. And obviously, she has a completely different viewpoint. Her viewpoint of it is very modern. She knows that she is with him forever, and she doesn’t see his point. But he just comes from a different place. And I really like, every place I could put in, that would really date him. Because I like when he is…..109.

Q: Chivalrous!

SM: When he’s different, because he has a lot of different experiences. Part of it is, he is stalling for time. He wants to string the…..because there is that part of him that knows it would be better if she went with Jacob. For her, in his mind. He never foresees her being a happy vampire. In his mind, it’s all the Rosalie reaction. He just thinks she will be miserable and there will be so much pain, for her. He wants her to be happy, so he thinks “the longer we string this along, maybe she is going to change her mind, maybe she’ll say yeah, I wanna stay human, I’ll do this.” And then there is just absolutely the physical fear. Because he is really worried about that part of it. The pain of becoming a vampire is not a joke! All this timing, the way I envision it, it’s a big deal. Some say “just bite her, just bite her.” Wouldn’t that just give you so much pause? It’s like you want your husband or your loved one — you want him to be like you, but you’re going to have to torture him for three days. It’s a long time for anyone and bad enough that it went on for three days. It’s a huge deal. That’s a big thing for him. Even knowing that she’ll get over it and it will pass…those three days are a gigantic hurdle.

Q: Do you think that the way that she fears…the fact that before she’s going to turn, she thinks “well what if after I turn, I’m not going to love him anymore or I’m not going to feel the same way?” Does he ever fear that at any time?

SM: Oh, he fears that. He does. She doesn’t much, because she feels that, ya know, “I’m gonna love you forever,” and he knows that things change. And after having just gone through this horrible thing, there could be part of her that turns around and says “you did this to me. I just went through all this horrible stuff because of you. Now my family is going to die, and I’m going to have to watch that.” He just only sees the negative. A lot of him becoming an optimist is, her reaction to being a vampire and seeing…she was right.

Twilight Reaches a UK Sales Record

OK so maybe due to a change of cover Twilight really kicked off over here in the UK. Could it all be down to the cover which made Twilight a success here?

I’d love to hear what you fans think about this. Also, does anyone own a copy of Twilight in these original UK version covers? I’m not sure who the pictures are meant to represent!
(I actually remember seeing these versions online before I’d read the books and thought they looked like kids books!)

Read on…

According to the Book Seller Blog:

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, the first instalment in the US novelist’s hugely popular dark romance series of the same name, has become only the 13th novel to sell more than two million copies in the UK since the turn century.

Stephenie Meyer follows in the footsteps of J K Rowling, Dan Brown and Mark Haddon – the only other authors to have achieved the two-million-in-the-21st-century feat.

Last week, the book sold 16,672 copies in the UK, taking its total sales to date to 2,005,609. Just over £9.7m has been spent on the book since it was first published in the UK in 2006 – a year in which it sold just 1,684 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan data.”

For those of you who didn’t discover Twilight until more recently, Twilight struggled to find an audience in the UK if for no other reason the UK distributor saddled it with a now replaced terrible cover and then came up with an arguably even more dreadful cover for New Moon (seen above). At the time, it was our perception that they  seemed hell bent on marketing it as dark vampire lit. As the article states, the book took off once it gained fame in the US, was repackaged in the US format after Eclipse, and not marketed as a dark, gothic, tale.

Incidentally, if you have the book with one of those covers and it’s in good shape, it stand potential as a collectors item particularly if you can get a Stephenie Meyer signature in it.
