Is Emma Watson a Twilight Hater?

Harry Potter star Emma Watson has allegedly said that unlike her kiss with co-star Rupert Grint, which has been highly anticipated, the Twilight Saga is ‘selling sex’!

According to W.E.N.N., Emma said in an interview with Empire magazine -

She says, “This kiss between Hermione and Ron is highly anticipated, it’s been building up for eight films now. And Harry Potter is not Twilight, you know; we’re not selling sex.

“So, whenever there is any hint of that, everybody gets terribly excited. In fact, it was horribly awkward; we couldn’t stop laughing.”

Following on from this, “Cinematical”posted the following artlicle -

Oh, The Twilight Saga. It’s the sexiest sex-free series we’ve ever seen. Bella leaves the sun, heads for the rain, and falls in love with a hundred + year-old virgin vampire who could break her with one single touch … or thrust as the case may be. He’s all distracted by his super vampire strength and early twentieth-century morals, which have him convinced that pre-marital sex might ruin Bella’s soul and make her eternally doomed for one act of teenage lust.

Abstinence is the name of the game, though that doesn’t keep the pair from cuddling every night, and occasionally partaking in super-steamy, half-clothed makeout sessions. Yet, as sexless as it is, could Twilight actually be selling sex?

Emma Watson, otherwise known as Hermione Granger from the other super-popular fantasy series Harry Potter, let loose a jab at The Twilight Saga while talking about the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. WENN quotes her as saying: “This kiss between Hermione and Ron is highly anticipated, it’s been building up for eight films now. And Harry Potter is not Twilight, you know; we’re not selling sex.”

It’s an interesting thought to consider — that Twilight, in all its abstinence-ridden glory, is not just sexy, but is actually selling sex. It makes sense. Though the actual, literal act does not happen until the couple is married in Breaking Dawn, there is nothing as prevalent in the tale as lust and sexual yearning … except maybe Bella’s obsession with Edward’s perfect looks. Though Stephenie Meyer gets knocked for a lot of things, the woman knows sexual tension, and infuses it into her series whenever she can. Yes, she stresses marriage before sex, but in a world where girls and boys now bite each other out of vampire play, and girls actually wait for their larger than life Edward Cullen, it’s not a jump to imagine fans thinking: “Well, my boyfriend isn’t a dangerous vampire … Let’s get it on!”

If fans are obsessed with a series that lathers on lust over and over again, wouldn’t that be selling sex a lot more than some simple and vague sex scene? What do you think? Can abstinence sell sex on the screen? Is The Twilight Saga teen sex foreplay?

So guys, what do you think?

Vampires: From Dracula to Twilight

There’s a complete slew of books to get your teeth into that have come about since Twilight made Vampires sexy. This book sttes in it’s blurb -

The Blurb: There’s something about vampires In all their deadly, blood-sucking incarnations, they fascinate us. From Count Dracula to Edward Cullen, for centuries we have been enthralled by the mysterious legends that surround these dangerous creatures, and vampires have rarely been more popular than they are today. Pale-skinned, dark-cloaked, garlic-hating… the folklore is crawling with memorable myths. But how much do we really know about the history of vampire folklore? And is there any truth in it?

Vlad the Impaler, the fifteenth-century warrior-prince renowned for his cruelty, is widely believed to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but the roots of vampire mythology date back many centuries more, and fanged creatures of all shapes and sizes feature in cultures throughout the world. The Chupacabra – a strange beast said to stalk the countryside of Latin America – may appear to have little in common with the suave, sinister noblemen of Gothic literature, or the tortured teen vampires of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series, but they all share one common obsession. A lust for blood.

Vampires explores these diverse myths and legends, their impact upon popular culture and the reason why we can’t get enough of their blood-sucking ways. If you long to know about your favourite vampire – whether it’s Edward Cullen, Angel or the master himself, Count Dracula – then get your teeth into this…

Other books that I have found that might be worth a look (even if they are just cashing in on the phenomena) are –

Twilight and Philosophy: Vampires, Vegetarians, and the Pursuit of Immortality , Bella Should Have Dumped Edward, which explores controvertial views and debates on the Twilight series and Vampire Forensics.

While I’m on the subject of vampires, sadly, Twilight will come to an end and we are looking at ways in which to expand the site so with that in mind, is there another books series, movie or TV show in the genre that has caught your imagination? Would you like to see more news about these? Let us know.

Love at First Bite: Unofficial Twilight Cookbook!

If your kids are caught up in the “Twilight” craze, why not translate the madness into kitchen magic? That’s the idea behind “Love at First Bite: The Unofficial Twilight Cook Book” by Gina Meyers (iUniverse, $14.95). Within its 200 pages are family-friendly recipes, as well as plenty of “Twilight” trivia. An easy sweet snack, this treat is easy enough for kids to make with a little guidance.

Werewolf chow

9 cups rice cereal, such as Chex brand

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup peanut butter chips

1/2 cup smooth peanut butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

11/2 cups powdered sugar

1. Place the cereal in a large zip-seal plastic bag; set aside.

2. In a large glass bowl, combine butter and chips. Cover with wax paper and microwave on high speed for about 1 minute. Stir well. If all the chips haven’t melted, microwave for an additional 10 to 20 seconds.

3. Once melted, stir in vanilla extract.

4. Pour mixture over the cereal in the plastic bag, add the powdered sugar, seal well and shake until completely mixed. Spread the mixture over a sheet of wax paper to cool thoroughly. Transfer to a serving bowl.

Great to do with the kids over the summer holidays!

NB: Most UK book retailers that I have tried online seem to be out of stock at the moment but I’m sure it will be back!

Update on ‘White Twilight’ Site Offering Free Shipping Outside UK

Since I’m very loathe to spend a fortune on shipping and postage costs, I had a scout around for sites that had reasonable costs and came up with the following site.

The Book Depository.co.uk claim to ship free worldwide including to the United States.Although the price per book at £5.99 ($9.36) is slightly more than other outlets, when you take the cost of shipping into account, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s worthwhile paying that little bit extr

Twilight Saga Facebook Has Over 11 Million Fans!

This must be heading towards being the largest group of fans on Facebook! As I type, there are 11 041 465 fans that like the page!! How amazing is that?

Also, a relative newborn in the Facebook official pages, The Twilight Sga Offical UK page has an equally amazing 25 026 fans who like their page. Not bad for a page that’s only been live for a few months.

Twilight Reaches a UK Sales Record

OK so maybe due to a change of cover Twilight really kicked off over here in the UK. Could it all be down to the cover which made Twilight a success here?

I’d love to hear what you fans think about this. Also, does anyone own a copy of Twilight in these original UK version covers? I’m not sure who the pictures are meant to represent!
(I actually remember seeing these versions online before I’d read the books and thought they looked like kids books!)

Read on…

According to the Book Seller Blog:

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, the first instalment in the US novelist’s hugely popular dark romance series of the same name, has become only the 13th novel to sell more than two million copies in the UK since the turn century.

Stephenie Meyer follows in the footsteps of J K Rowling, Dan Brown and Mark Haddon – the only other authors to have achieved the two-million-in-the-21st-century feat.

Last week, the book sold 16,672 copies in the UK, taking its total sales to date to 2,005,609. Just over £9.7m has been spent on the book since it was first published in the UK in 2006 – a year in which it sold just 1,684 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan data.”

For those of you who didn’t discover Twilight until more recently, Twilight struggled to find an audience in the UK if for no other reason the UK distributor saddled it with a now replaced terrible cover and then came up with an arguably even more dreadful cover for New Moon (seen above). At the time, it was our perception that they  seemed hell bent on marketing it as dark vampire lit. As the article states, the book took off once it gained fame in the US, was repackaged in the US format after Eclipse, and not marketed as a dark, gothic, tale.

Incidentally, if you have the book with one of those covers and it’s in good shape, it stand potential as a collectors item particularly if you can get a Stephenie Meyer signature in it.

See more on the Book Seller.
